Overview
"Sustainable agriculture may be defined as our ability to produce enough, good quality, affordable food for the human population in ways that are socially and ethically acceptable, without damaging the planets ecosystems and our environment.
There is unprecedented, and growing, pressure on our natural resources such as water, land and fuel from a rising human population, with demands for an ever higher standard of living, alongside climate change and diminishing oil reserves. Coupled to these pressures are the social responsibility issues of employee welfare, business ethics, food safety and animal welfare.
As with all challenges facing humanity we do not start with a blank sheet, we have to evolve from where we find ourselves today. Our current food chains and farming systems have to be developed to tackle the new and emerging issues and to implement the opportunities provided by our growing knowledge and understanding.
This is why the FAI is pleased to be partnering with McDonald’s Europe on the Flagship Farm project to identify best practices and solutions that contribute to addressing the challenges our agriculture now faces. This will support the delivery of the next steps to evolve our farming and food supply systems to meet the economic, environmental and ethical needs that make up a sustainable food chain."
