Animal welfare in dairy farming
Friesland Foods Dairy Farm, Netherlands
This farm demonstrates good practice in animal welfare through a range of actions it has taken. Dual chamber water beds have been introduced, improving cow comfort and reducing injuries. Grooved anti-slip flooring gives improved cow comfort which allows the cows to show natural behaviour. Weekly foot-bathing and tri-annual foot trimming has reduced the incidence of lameness to extremely low levels, which is a major health and welfare benefit for the cows. An outdoor loafing area is provided for cows during the summer, allowing cows a “free choice” on access to the outside.
