Environmental good practice

Agriculture is a major user of land and water resources and can result in significant environmental impacts. Due to the nature of this close relationship with the land, farmers have the opportunity to minimise negative impacts to the environment through developing and implementing good practice. Farmers have a fine balance to strike; minimising pollution and protecting natural resources while continuing to run an economically-efficient business.

Many farmers are rising to the challenge, and building environmental considerations into the way they run their businesses, formally adopting environmental farm management practices. However the agricultural community continues to face challenges, such as water management, managing flood risk and climate change.

The farms featured here have demonstrated good environmental practice relevant to their situation; some due to implementing innovative practices in a developing economy, some by the adoption of new technology and others by working closely with local NGOs.

Here we concentrate on climate change, natural resources, ecosystem protection, agro technology and waste.
